Michelle M. Barwell, M.D

Michelle Marie Barwell, MD is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She graduated magna cum laude with Distinction in Psychology from Duke University in 1993 and University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1997. She completed her psychiatry residency at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2001, where she served on the UPMC Ethics Committee.

After residency, Dr. Barwell worked at a community hospital before returning to UPMC where she worked on an assertive community treatment team and collaborated with Healthcare for the Homeless. She was medical director of Case Management Services and both taught and supervised residents. She was the director of both the Community Psychiatry elective and the Operation Safety Net Community Psychiatry elective, for which she won the best senior elective award. She has lectured in the community on psychiatric illness, street psychiatry, homelessness, and psychopharmacology. She was on the board of directors for CONTACT Pittsburgh (a mental health hotline), and now serves both on the board of directors and as a volunteer for Physician Support Line, a peer support line staffed by psychiatrists.

Dr. Barwell has experience working in many diverse settings, including inpatient, outpatient, community clinics for the unhoused and uninsured, and direct street outreach. Since 2009, she has been treating adults and adolescents at Cranberry Psychological Center, where she blends medication management with psychotherapy tailored to each patient’s unique needs. She believes that providing good care starts with having a strong, collaborative relationship with her patients so that they are educated about their illnesses and treatment options and can work with her to determine what treatment is best for them. Dr. Barwell founded Pittsburgh Neurocare Center so that she could offer TMS therapy not only to her patients but to everyone in the Pittsburgh area.
